Do you want to add some pizzazz to the decor in your home? After laying down the carpet, painting the walls, and hauling in the furniture, you may still need some pieces to enhance the theme of the room, or to add a touch of coziness. When creating the decor for any room in your home, you should certainly consider wall sconces, such as Victorian floral wall sconces.
If walls could talk
A sconce is one of those words that we probably have heard a few times, but might have to rack our brains about what exactly it is. Simply put, a sconce is a decorative piece that attaches to a wall and holds either candles or an electric light. Materials such as metal, wood and ceramic are typically used to make sconces.
While the sconce serves as an attractive addition to today's homes, we can tract its history to before the 1400s. The first sconces certainly placed function over form. They were a half circle of metal that held a candle opening. This semicircle was attached to a flat, basic plate.
Within time, the sconce gradually became more decorative. By the 1500s, Elizabethan "candle plates of latten" emerged. These pieces evolved into sconces of the 1600s. One style included branches that extended from the lowest point of a brass or copper dish.
As the evolution of sconces continued, they became more complex and more decorative. The metal improved. Individual parts became more detailed. And several innovations were created, such as using mirrors instead of backplates, to improve the value of reflected light. Even more original practices included placing a half candelabrum (sconce holding 2 or more candles) in front of a mirror, to create an image of a complete candelabrum. A particularly interesting sconce of the 1640s included a human forearm extending from a mask or hole, with the hand gripping a candle-holder.
